Response of Point-Absorbing Wave Energy Conversion System in 50-Years Return Period Extreme Focused Waves

This work evaluates the survivability of a point-absorbing wave energy converter at sea states along and inside 50-year environmental contour for selected-site in North Sea, by utilizing CFD simulations. Focused groups based on NewWave theory are used to model extreme waves. The numerical breaking waves have been previously predicted analytical criterion, showing that latter provides an accurate estimate state. forces key components device system’s dynamics studied compared. Slamming loads identified interaction with waves, particularly compared formulas slamming estimation as suggested industrial standards. Considering characteristics, accompanied phenomena resulting WEC’s response, this contributes identification design-waves given selected site. top-left side is more critical area it consists steep high inducing significant nonlinear phenomena, loads.
